In good a friendship there is no score card. No tit for tat. There are times one friend can do more, though it all seems to balance out.

You are being used when someone takes advantage of your kindness or position and they are rarely there for you in any meaningful way.

You don’t get to feel used when you do things you were never asked to do or you are a chronic YESser. I was one once and then I forced myself into an experiment that was skin crawlingly uncomfortable and terrifying. I started saying, “no,” (really nicely) and more often and found that miraculously people still liked me and wanted to be my friend. Amazing.

  1. Kate, I am loving your blog and the blend of personal experience/professional advice you have to offer. I’ve never read a blog like yours before! Keep it up!

  2. Melanie Johnson permalink

First, HELLO! Second, I came across your blog reading Amy’s and I can say that I was intrigued by the title of your blog…after reading through some entries it hit home for some relationships I have seen fall apart and the entries are definitely relavent to true friendship and relationships. There are a few people I could and prob should forward this to đŸ˜‰ Hope you are well!

    • Melanie it is so great to hear from you! Hope all is well with you and your family! Thank you for your support! I hope to delve deeper into the mechanics of dealing with difficult friendship situations soon. You know how it goes with small kids-slowly but surely things miraculously get accomplished. Cannot imagine how much your kids have grown! Hope all is well! Kate
