Does your chest tightening every time you see her number on your caller ID? When things are stressful for her do you find yourself in endless phone conversations while your partner or kids are clamoring for your attention or you have other things you need to be doing? When you spend time with him in a group are you tensely waiting for the moment he will say or do something that makes things awkward and uncomfortable for you and everyone else?

When your friend is particularly needy of you, do you find yourself snapping at loved ones more often? Are you grinding your teeth at night? Does the relationship zap your energy? Do you feel you are going to do or say something at any moment that might upset her? Are you often worried that your friend is angry with you?

Welcome to friendship stress!

I don’t think I need to list all of the studies performed on stress and health to convince you that stress IS bad for your health. With that said, I think I can safely conclude that a long-term stressful friendship is likely impacting your physical and mental health and your other relationships. Is it worth it? Probably not, but sometimes knowing this we still find it hard to break from a friend.
