Handy Checklist

September 17, 2013

Do any of these describe how you feel in your friendship?

Stressed Out

Overvalued or Devalued

Obligated or Guilty

Verbally/Emotionally Abused

If you answered, “yes” to any of these I would venture to guess that your friendship is slightly to very dysfunctional. None of these describe the way one typically feels when in a quality friendship.

Try to differentiate if these are feelings you have in relation to the friend in question (a friendship problem) or if you often have these feelings with any number of people (your problem). If you feel a certain way around a specific person most of the time over an established period of time and you don’t feel that way around others then it is quite likely that the feelings you have are specific to the relationship in question and not due to your issues.  Well, they’re still your issues but you know what I mean.

I think it would help to elaborate on each of the above feelings to illustrate how they might play out in a friendship. Next post . . .”Stressed Out.”
